How Is Scrap Car Value Calculated?
A car's scrap value starts with its weight and the local complete-car rate, less pickup and processing. Here is the formula, what moves it, and why a real offer can be higher.
A car's base scrap value is usually estimated from its weight and the price local buyers currently pay for complete vehicles, less the cost of pickup and processing. A real offer can be higher if the car runs, has reusable parts, still has its original catalytic converter, or can be repaired and resold.
The short formula
Estimated scrap value = vehicle weight × local complete-car rate − pickup and processing costs
Treat the result as a starting point, not a guaranteed payout. Buyers price a whole vehicle differently from clean steel because a car also contains glass, rubber, plastics, fluids and non-ferrous metals that all need handling.
How to estimate your car's scrap value
Start with your vehicle's curb weight and the current complete-car rate in your area. Then account for pickup, processing, condition, completeness, reusable parts and buyer demand. Finally, compare that estimate with a real offer for your exact vehicle and location.
Keep two numbers apart when you compare:
- Scrap-only value: the curb weight multiplied by the current local complete-car rate, less pickup and processing.
- Market offer: what buyers will actually pay for your car today, which also reflects its condition, parts and resale potential.
Complete-car rates move with metal markets and differ by region, so use a rate dated this week from your own area. A rate from last year, or from another province or state, can be far off.
What affects a scrap car's value?
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Vehicle weight | Heavier vehicles generally contain more recyclable material. |
| Current local rates | Complete-car rates change by region and over time. |
| Condition | A running or repairable vehicle may be worth more than its material value. |
| Parts demand | Reusable engines, transmissions, body panels and electronics may add value. |
| Completeness | Missing major parts, wheels or the catalytic converter can reduce an offer. |
| Pickup | Distance, access, keys, flat tires and underground parking affect recovery cost. |
| Paperwork | Clear ownership documents make the sale easier and can widen the pool of buyers. |
A worked example
Say your car has a curb weight of 2,661 lb (about 1,207 kg). That is about 1.33 US short tons, or 1.21 metric tonnes.
- Multiply the weight by the complete-car rate your local buyers pay today, per short ton in the US or per tonne in Canada.
- Subtract the pickup and processing cost.
- The result is your scrap-only estimate.
If a real offer comes in higher, the difference usually comes from the car's condition, the demand for its parts, or several buyers competing for it.
Why a Torqi offer may be higher than scrap value
Scrap math assumes the car is worth only its recyclable material. A recycler may see more than that. The car may run, be repairable, supply parts that are in demand, or fit what a buyer needs for their inventory right now. Torqi lets eligible recyclers compete for your car, so the offer you accept is the strongest bid available rather than one generic per-ton price.
How to get an accurate offer
- Enter the exact year, make, model and location.
- Say whether the vehicle starts, drives and rolls.
- Disclose any damage and missing major parts.
- Confirm which ownership documents you have.
- Review the offer, pickup terms and payment details before you accept.
Rules for transferring ownership and handling plates depend on where you live. See our guides for scrap car values in Canada and junk car values in the US. Not sure whether to scrap at all? Our guide on whether to repair, sell, trade in or scrap your car walks through the decision.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my offer different from the scrap estimate?
The estimate measures material value using general assumptions. A live offer also considers condition, parts demand, resale potential, location, pickup and how many buyers want the car right now.
How much do junkyards pay per ton for cars?
There is no permanent national rate. Complete-car prices vary by location, buyer and date. Use a current local rate, or request a live offer for your exact car.
Is a running car worth more?
Often, yes. A running or repairable vehicle may have resale or parts value beyond its metal.
Does the catalytic converter affect value?
It can. A missing original converter may reduce the offer, because the vehicle is incomplete and the converter itself contains recoverable materials.
